Ana Locking on Doubles / Pairs / Couples, by Louise Lawler

La Favorita

This interview sees designer Ana Locking (Toledo, 1970) discuss the photographic work Doubles / Pairs / Couples (1982–1985) by Louise Lawler (Bronxville, New York, 1947), an artist she discovered at an exhibition on the Pictures Generation which transformed the way she understood art.

Locking analyses the photographs that make up the work, exploring in greater depth some of the principles that defined the Pictures Generation: a critical gaze towards traditional art structures, the questioning of forms of representation, the demystification of the artwork and the strategic use of repetition and seriality. Concepts, moreover, which are not only linked to her work in the fashion world, but also form her life philosophy, shaped by a critical, activist gaze in relation to political, social and cultural issues.

This interview is part of La Favorita, a project which invites public figures to choose their favourite work from the Museo Reina Sofía Collections and share their personal history around it.
