Pepe Espaliú’s work revolves around a tension between desire and language rooted in the psychoanalysis of Freud and Lacan and in conceptual art, which he incorporated into his training in Barcelona in the mid-1970s after meeting Óscar Masotta, who introduced Jacques Lacan to Spain, and subsequently attending Lacan’s seminars in Paris. From the mid-1980s until his death, he developed a visual language of great formal sophistication and autobiographical content, in which the body becomes a political territory of conflict. All this took place in a context in which homosexual identity and AIDS remained silenced topics in the Spanish public sphere.
With a formal appearance close to minimalism, Sin título (Tres jaulas) immediately references the human body, conceived as an empty space, a fragile container and a mutable boundary. The work articulates a dialogue between the transparency of the structure and the opacity of its meaning, generating visual and conceptual tension. By expanding into space, it challenges its own physical limits and proposes a subtle but powerful meditation on the dialectic between the desire for autonomy and the need for the other as central themes in Espaliú’s final period, marked by the awareness of illness with its consequent isolation and the urgency of shared care.
