Spanning over 50 years, Concha Jerez’s artistic career is defined by its multifaceted nature, both thematically and in terms of format. Her work on historical memory, feminism and social criticism has been a constant since her beginnings.
In Seguimiento de una noticia, the artist denounces censorship in the media during the years when Spain was emerging from dictatorship and building a democracy, based on a real event: the death of five workers at the hands of the police during a protest at Vitoria’s New Cathedral in May 1977. In contrast to the figurative language used in political art at the time, Concha Jerez stands out for her serial work that chooses a conceptual language. The artist collected 32 newspaper pages, which she photocopied in A4 format, and censored them in two di!erent ways: one partial, allowing glimpses of the content of news items referring to the Vitoria incidents; and the other full censorship, blacking out the other news items.
