Carlos Urroz Arancibia
Institutional Cabinet Director
Responsibilities
Directing, developing, coordinating and supervising the Protocol, Institutional Relations, Strategic Development, Audience, Sponsorship and Commercial areas and the relationship with Spain’s Ministry of Culture, the Museo Reina Sofía’s Friends Foundation and the Museo Reina Sofía Foundation, in addition to representing the Museo inside its buildings and internationally. He also assists the Museo’s Management team and collaborates in the design of communication and publicity actions, under the terms established in the Resolution of 28 May 2024 (Provision 11110 of the Official State Gazette, 1 June 2024).
Academic background
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and Corporate Legal Counsel obtained from the ICADE-Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (Madrid) in 1989. Further training includes on specialised programmes such as the Cultural Management Certificate (New York University, 1998) and the Business Case Analysis Course (Harvard University, 1989). Languages: high levels of English, French and Italian and a basic knowledge of German and Portuguese.
Professional experience
In July 2024 Carlos was named director of the Museo Reina Sofía’s Institutional Cabinet, a role he currently holds. From 2019 to 2023 he directed the TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary foundation for contemporary art and public action. From 2011 to 2019 he directed the ARCOmadrid art fair, driving forward the creation of ARCOlisboa, ARCO Gallery Walks, the “A” Awards for Collecting and the Opening section, among other projects. In 2005 he created UP Urroz Proyectos, a company for cultural organisation and communication, which he directed until 2011. From 1998 to 2006 he was director of Galería Helga de Alvear, working with prominent international artists and curating the gallery’s projects, and, from 1995 to 1998, he served as assistant director of ARCOmadrid.
In the academic sphere, Carlos has worked as a lecturer on the MA in Curatorial Studies at the University of Navarra and on the MA in the Art Market and the Management of Art-Related Companies at Nebrija University, as well as giving seminars and lectures at renowned institutions such as the IE Business School.
Across his professional career, Carlos has been honoured with the Medalha Municipal de Mérito Cultural from the City of Lisbon (2019), the Medal of Merit from the Government of Peru (2018), the Medal from the Government of Colombia (2015) and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Republic (2014). Furthermore, he is a plastic arts advisor to the Community of Madrid and a member of the programming committee of Fundación ICO.
