In the context of his solo exhibition Luminous Specters (May 28 – October 20, 2025), Guatemalan artist Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa presents a new performance that deepens his ongoing exploration of symbolism, memory, and cultural narratives.

From Spiral to Spiral interweaves European colonial history with the intimate and intergenerational memories of the artist’s own family through an examination of the production and uses of playing cards. Once a tightly regulated monopoly and a key source of revenue for the Spanish Crown—also used to control counterfeiting and curb gambling—playing cards take on a different meaning in Ramírez-Figueroa’s narrative. In the hands of the women in his family, the cards become tools for divination and a means of subsistence.

From this perspective, the artist reclaims the symbolic power of the cards, transforming them from instruments of imperial control into carriers of personal and ancestral knowledge. In his practice, Ramírez-Figueroa dismantles the hierarchies between official history and oral traditions, revealing the folds where the political and the affective converge.

Building on this symbolic system, the artist creates an original costume that functions both as a sculptural object and a performative instrument. Each garment, composed of multiple cards meticulously hand-embroidered by Guatemalan weavers, establishes a direct connection to the artist’s heritage and to Indigenous artisanal knowledge.

This activity is part of the public program of the Cáder Institute of Central American Art.
