As part of the collaboration with Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation, Museo Reina Sofía calls for an annual research fellowship.
The aim of the fellowship is to promote research into the work and career of the artist Esteban Vicente (Turégano, Segovia, 1903 – Brigdehampton, New York, 2001), as well as his context, influences, and role within the international modern and contemporary art scene. It also seeks to foster participation in a process of critical reflection situated both within the areas of interest of the Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation and within the research framework of the Directorate of Studies of the Museo Reina Sofía.
The following are some of the proposed, non-binding lines of research:
- Connections between Esteban Vicente and the context of the Generation of ’27, through the relationships between art, poetry, and literature.
- The renewal of art-historical writing.
- Intellectual life, art, and exile.
- Esteban Vicente’s teaching practice in the United States and Puerto Rico.
- The role of Abstract Expressionism in the internationalisation and reception of contemporary Spanish art.
- Cultures of abstraction and new materialisms
