READ Madrid. The Festival of Books and Ideas comes into being with a strong focus on art-making and independent publishing practices, seeking to build a transatlantic cultural bridge with Latin America. By way of different encounters, the festival’s programme looks to open new communities of interpretation and horizons of political imagination through a common space constructed by essay, study, reading and writing. These practices are understood in an expanded, collective and social capacity and are presented through conversations, as well as a performance by Álvaro Romero and the screening of Lucrecia Martel’s most recent film.

The core thematic stands of READ Madrid. The Festival of Books and Ideas are: minority popular culture — that is, how to activate a practice of emancipatory popular culture; enraged peace — namely, how to sustain justice, mourning and reparation without reverting to pacifying imaginaries devoid of conflict; and fiction opposite forgetting — in other words, approaching the role of science fiction, horror and speculative narratives as resistance opposite the liberalism of forgetting.
