El Reina Sofía estrena Pieza Única, donde se podrá descubrir obras de las colecciones al margen de la exposición permanente
This space is set in motion via a donation from the Meana Larrucea Collection
On Floor 1 of its main site, in the adjoining area between the Sabatini and Nouvel Buildings, the Museo Reina Sofía unveils Single Piece, a space which temporarily displays a work from its Collection, beyond narratives of permanent exhibition. From December 2025, the public can encounter Art Center 6 (Blow Down), Thomas Hirschhorn’s 2001 work, which was recently incorporated via a donation from the Meana Larrucea Collection.
Founded by lawyer Fernando Meana (Bilbao, 1934 – Madrid, 2020) with his wife, María Victoria Larrucea, this private collection comprises more than five hundred works by salient contemporary artists such as Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias, Cildo Meireles, Cindy Sherman and Miquel Barceló, among others.
In 2013, at the opening of an exhibition of his collection in Bilbao, Fernando Meana stated: “I sincerely hope as many people as possible enjoy this collection”. Therefore, the display of this piece by Thomas Hirschhorn is the biggest homage the Reina Sofía can pay in appreciation of Meana’s impassioned and innovative way of collecting.
Thomas Hirschhorn is a pivotal artist in so-called institutional critique, an influential movement which, in the 1980s, spearheaded a questioning of the art system and power structure, in addition to generating economic value for contemporary art museums. Art Center 6 is the sixth in a series of installations representing a present-day art institution in the form of a doll’s house.
