Victoria Lomasko
Interview
In this video, Victoria Lomasko (Serpukhov, 1978) talks about her working method and analyses the series Drawing Lessons (2010–2011), which is part of the Museo Reina Sofía Collection. The series is the outcome of a voluntary project she carried out at the Juvenile Prison in Mozhaysk, where she taught drawing to the inmates.
Lomasko understands art as a means of social transformation. Concerned with the repercussion of major historical events on citizens’ daily lives, she employs drawing to document the reality she observes and experiences first-hand. Moreover, she travels to interview and get to know the protagonists in her drawings in person and thus establish personal empathy with those depicted. Her graphic reports also bring to light her critical view of the political and social situation in Russia and countries from the former USSR.
