Thomas Hirschhorn, Art Center 6 (Blow Down), 2001, installation
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
The work Art Center 6 (Blow Down) (2001) by artist Thomas Hirschhorn (Berna, 1957) unveils Single Piece, a new space inside the Museo centred on temporarily exhibiting a work from the Museo Reina Sofía Collections, foregrounding aspects from the present day and shining a light on cultures of support that contribute to building a public collection.
Hirschhorn is a pivotal artist in so-called institutional critique, an influential movement which, in the 1980s, spearheaded a questioning of the art system and power structure, in addition to generating economic value for contemporary art museums. In the installation Art Center 6, recently incorporated into the Museo’s holdings via a donation from the Meana-Larrucea Collection, the artist represents a present-day art institution in the form of a doll’s house.
The work is on view in Single Piece, a room located on Floor 1 of the Museo’s main site, in the adjoining area between the Sabatini and Nouvel Buildings.
