The exhibition of Stockholmer Raum (Für Rafael Moneo) (Stockholm Room [For Rafael Moneo]) at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, a building designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, represents a change in direction towards a more elusive narrative sculpture, in which the installation is presented as a setting for less fixed meanings. The German artist Reinhard Mucha works with theatrical productions, into which he incorporates a variety of materials including pieces of furniture, architectural elements and photographs. His work is defined by the use of such objects, changed semantically and physically for ironic or nostalgic effect. In this particular case, his use of photographs, pedestals and gallery components evokes the rhetorical and theatrical structures of art, replacing the figure of the artist with an image of what surrounds an art exhibition. In this installation, Mucha is looking at the very idea of exhibition as a device, pushing the boundaries of the use of allegory as a generalised strategy in artistic practices of the 1980s.
