Paolo Gasparini’s dummy Cuba corresponds to a photobook project he was initially going to publish in France with the collaboration of writer Armand Gatti but which would ultimately remain unpublished. Between 1961 and 1965, Gasparini lived in Cuba, where he worked for the newspaper Revolución and the National Council for Culture. As well as photographing Cuban architecture, he worked on documentary recordings with a narrow-gauge camera, compiling images with ideological and social content which portrayed the early years of the Cuban Revolution. Gasparini’s style and philosophy drew strongly from the figure of Paul Strand and the photographs of Robert Frank and William Klein.
