In 1934 Barcelona’s Hot Club opened, with live jazz acts and its own magazine and radio programme. From that moment, jazz had arrived, and Barcelona became a frequent venue for orchestras and musicians, such as the guitarist Billy Mackel. Mackel played in Barcelona in the mid-1950s, recording with the pianist Tete Montoliu and being photographed by Francesc Català-Roca, who also took photographs of Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton, among many others.
