About ICAC
Cáder Institute for Central American Art
The Cáder Institute for Central American Art (ICAC) at the Museo Reina Sofía is an initiative devoted to the study, research, and dissemination of the practices, scenes, and histories of Central American art and its diasporas. Founded by Salvadoran collector and cultural advocate Mario Cáder-Frech, the project forms part of the Museum’s Study Department and has been developed in collaboration with the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía and its U.S. counterpart, the Museo Reina Sofia Foundation (USA).
With research as its driving force, ICAC seeks to build a platform for critical reference and institutional commitment to the region’s artistic and theoretical production through a series of lines of action combining editorial work, public programming, and the acquisition of artworks and bibliographic holdings. Conceived as a long-term structural initiative, it aims to generate spaces that foster critical thinking, dialogue, and the circulation of contemporary Central American art from a situated and collaborative perspective. The project strives to contribute to a more equitable cultural ecology, grounded in reciprocity, in which the region’s artistic practices can be rigorously researched, disseminated, and preserved.
The choice of a museum as host institution reinforces ICAC’s commitment to integrating Central American voices within a strong institutional framework. At the same time, with the support of the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía and its U.S. counterpart, ICAC builds bridges between the public and private spheres, and between the local and the transnational.
ICAC is directed by Julia Morandeira Arrizabalaga, Director of Studies at the Museo Reina Sofía, who works closely with Carolina González, Director of the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía, in the development of the project. It is also supported by a Council composed of patrons committed to the sustainability of its mission, as well as an Advisory Committee of professionals who guide the development of its programs.
