The Museo Reina Sofía’s Intervals series, which screens recent films with limited distribution, presents Sophie Bruneau’s Rêver sous le capitalisme. By way of interviews with twelve workers talking about their dreams, the film explores the way in which monotonous and repetitive work shapes the contemporary subject.

Rêver sous le capitalisme draws inspiration from The Third Reich of Dreams, by German journalist Charlotte Beradt, who in the 1930s collected the recurring dreams and nightmares of the people of Berlin as the Nazis were rising to power. Thirty years later, in 1966, and an exile in Paris, Beradt published the book with the help of Hannah Arendt, setting forth a psychological geography with the fear and anxiety experienced by citizens and revealed as a foreboding in the world of dreams.

Through a common thread in the interviews, Bruneau takes this methodology to explore the invisible, general malaise over the effects of capitalism on daily life and people’s psychological states. The film uses voiceovers in distinctly contemporary shots of spaces of work and consumerism, for instance the offices of multi-nationals and shopping centres, thereby creating the mental landscape of dreams with the physical space that characterises our social and economic system.
