The Neighbourhood Picnic is an annual celebration organised by the Museo Situado assembly, a network comprising associations, activists and residents from Madrid’s Lavapiés area, a working-class, mixed-raced neighbourhood hit hard by gentrification and to which the Museo Reina Sofía belongs. This year film joins in with the revelry via the screening of Jacques Duron’s Souvenirs de Madrid (Madrid Souvenirs, 2019), a unique film on the peoples, customs and places of Lavapiés in the 1990s and shot as living pictures of a huge verbena (street fair).

Film-maker Jacques Duron and editor Fabienne Morel filmed in Lavapiés and the centre of Madrid from 1995 to 1997, employing static shots, a tripod, direct sound and no voiceovers or interviews. The film, therefore, sought to depict ambiences typical of traditional and pre-modern Madrid, and with the same atmosphere life occurs within. Finished and first screened in 2019, Souvenirs de Madrid unearths a Madrid immemorial at risk of disappearing. An ensemble of living pictures which recall the verbenas of Maruja Mallo, the streets of José Gutiérrez-Solana and the one-act farces of Carlos Arniches, with vignettes in fishmongers, bars, squares, corner shops, haberdasheries and pubs bursting with aprons, overalls, slot machines, clothes drying in courtyards, gatherings, card games and outdoor conversations. And also public religious scenes, such as kissing the feet of the Christ of Medinaceli and the festivities of las Mayas and los Mayos, or laic frenzy mixed with sacred devotion, for instance the spectacle of the trans singer Milana Rocío “Emy” (1960–2021) in Calle del Oso during the verbena of Saint Cajetan in Lavapiés.

Ultimately, the film renders an account of the life of the “eternal people” of Madrid and its neighbourhoods, mirroring what they have always been, despite the best efforts of development, affluence and globalisation to conceal it.
