For Moroccan artist Safaa Erruas (Tetouan, 1976) the act of weaving opens up a rethinking of the history underlying all women: the history of our bodies, our lived experiences, our travels, materialising and entwining with the histories of other people who simultaneously weave the same cloth.
This workshop is geared towards the collective production of a textile piece which, in contrast to traditional weaving, comprises objects and elements from our daily lives. Veering away from the usual rigidity employed in weaving techniques, participants select their own materials to transfer memories and narratives that build a collective history and canvas. The aim is to commonly rethink histories, both past and, more importantly, present and future.
Safaa Erruas is an artist. In 1998 she graduated from the Institut National des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan and since 1996 has regularly exhibited in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Norway, Algeria, India and the USA. Erruas’s work explores ideas of the body and borders through visceral objects created through weaving.
