Bio
Guy Woueté (Douala, Cameroon, 1980), he studied sculpture and painting in Douala and was a resident at the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. He graduated at the University of Paris 8 as well as from École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels, where he currently teaches.
His work always encompasses elements of social criticism, questions surrounding borders, migration and symbols of domination in an era of globalization. Colonial past of his country plays a major role in his work. Using history as a source of material, Woueté aims to break down conventional attitudes which nourish racism, discriminations, paternalism and alienation in all its forms.
Through the process of recording the real, Woueté creates objects, images and performative acts that are part of a network of multiple meanings. Evoking the North South axis of the world and exploring the traces of (colonial) history in the present, his works open narrative of social issues and aesthetic. He collects moments and things of experiences that blends in collages, installation, performance, video, photography as well as sculpture, painting and artist’s books.
His work has been exhibit at many museums and art events such us the University of Fine Arts (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam), S.M.A.K (Gent, Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Brussels, Belgium), the De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam, the Netherlans), the Biennale of African Photography (Bamako, Malí), the Lubumbashi Biennale (Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo), the National Museum Yaoundé (Yaoundé, Cameroon), the Biennales of Dak’Art (Dakar, Senegal), the Enough Room for Space (Drogenbos, Belgium) and the Spazzju Kreattiv (Valletta, Malta) among others.
