Bio

Daniela Ortiz (Cusco, Peru, 1985) is an artist who lives and works en Barcelona (Spain). Her work generates narratives in which the concepts of nationality, racialization, class and gender are used as a critical lens to analyze colonial, capitalist and patriarchal power structures. Her recent projects and research address the European system of migration control, its links to colonialism and the legal mechanisms created by European institutions in order to exercise violence against migrant and racialized populations. She has also developed various projects about the Peruvian upper class and their ways of exploiting domestic workers. Recently, Ortiz’s artistic practice has focused on the visual and manual, developing works with ceramics, collage, and using formats such as children’s books, with the intention to distance herself from the aesthetics of European conceptualism.

In addition to her artistic practice, she is a mother of a 3-year old child, conducts workshops and talks, and participates in diverse debates and struggles against the system of European migration control and institutionalized racism.
