The collection of works by the Estampa Popular group in the holdings of the Museo originate from 1960, when a set of prints made by the Madrid Estampa Popular became part of the old Museo de Arte Contemporáneo.
In 2010, the presence of the group’s works in the Collection increased significantly with the acquisition of a set of 84 prints made by 47 artists, members of the Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia and Biscay Estampa Popular groups, in addition to pieces donated by Galería La Caja Negra and Tomás Llorens and Ana Peters.
This ensemble of artworks led, for the first time in the Museo, to the assembly of the monographic room Estampa Popular. The Irruption of Anti-Franco Reality in Art, with other works by the Catalonia and Galicia groups entering the Collection via a donation made by Alexandre Grimal and the family of Xavier Pousa, respectively. These incorporations are all pivotal given the group’s recurrent operations outside the art market and the ensuing lack of major collections given the scattered nature of their output and locations.
