Open Call for Submissions for Visiting Researchers at the Museo Reina Sofía, Deadline: December 31, 2009


The Conference of Directors of Madrid Universities (CRUMA), Banco Santander and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía open their call for submissions for five Visiting Researcher positions—artists and other researchers—during a two-month residency in 2010.
The positions aim to foster research and participation in a process of collective reflection by making bibliographical resources and documents at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía available to artists and researchers; likewise, the program aims to foster participation in research areas connected to the Official Graduate Studies Program in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture at the Museum.


Eligible candidates include:

  • Researchers and artists specializing in areas of knowledge and strategic creation at the Museo Reina Sofía, tied to the Graduate Studies Program in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture
  • Researchers and artists whose work analyzes and proposes methods and poetics of critical intervention in contemporary culture, with emphasis on the postcolonial debate and globalization, the politics of gender and new manifestations of collective thought and articulation of ideas
  • Researchers and artists whose field of analysis and creation addresses the cultural and artistic reality in Latin America through diverse sources: alternative definitions resistant to hegemonic modernity in “the North”, the poetic and political activation of the avant-garde artistic legacy in Latin America, the construction of new subjectivities on a global scale
  • Researchers and artists interested in exploring the modes of production, management and interpretation of information and documentation in new archival methods, as well as those interested in researching modes information-sharing in open networks
  • Researchers and artists who contemplate the pedagogical features of their work, or who make the exploration of new modes of pedagogy the aim of their work

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR FIVE VISITING RESEARCHERS AT THE MUSEO NACIONAL CENTRO DE ARTE REINA SOFIA IN 2010, SPONSORED BY THE CONFERENCE OF DIRECTORS OF MADRID UNIVERSITIES (CRUMA), BANCO SANTANDER AND THE MUSEO NACIONAL CENTRO DE ARTE "REINA SOFIA"


The University of Alcalá, with representation at the Conference of Directors of Public Madrid Universities (CRUMA), publishes its first call for submissions for “Visiting Researchers at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía” in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Banco Santander, in accordance with the following


GUIDELINES

  1. Purpose

    Five Visiting Researcher positions will be offered at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) in 2010.

  2. Requirements for candidacy

    To be eligible for a Visiting Researcher position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

    a) Provide accredited documentation as a professional researcher, artist or teacher involved in one or more of the following lines of work and study:

    - Analysis and/or proposals on methods and poetics of critical intervention in contemporary culture, with emphasis on postcolonial debates and globalization, the politics of gender, and new manifestations of collective thought and articulation of ideas

    - Analysis and/or creation on cultural and artistic reality in Latin America through diverse sources: alternative and resistant definitions of hegemonic modernity in “the North”, the poetic and political activation of the avant-garde artistic legacy in Latin America, the construction of new subjectivities on a global scale

    - Exploration in modes of production, the management and interpretation of information and documentation in new cultures of the archive, as well as in researching modes of information-sharing in open networks

    - Exploration of new pedagogical methods and/or analysis of the pedagogical features of one’s own investigative or artistic work

    b) Present a research project to be carried out during the Residency, a description of which shall not exceed 3,000 words

    c) Present the project and a seminar open to the public at MNCARS during the Residency. Both the project and seminar will be organized in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Programming at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía

  3. - Aims and objectives of the Visiting Researcher positions

    3.1. The call for submissions for Visiting Researchers aims to foster research and participation in a process of collective reflection by making bibliographical resources and documents at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía available to artists and researchers; likewise, the program aims to foster participation in research areas connected to the Official Graduate Studies Program in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture at MNCARS.

    3.2. The Visiting Researcher positions do not involve contractual or statutory terms of any kind, nor do they involve labor relations or terms of state employment between the beneficiaries and MNCARS.

  4. Endowment and Duration of the Visiting Researcher positions

    4.1. The endowment for each individual Visiting Researcher position amounts to a gross of six thousand euros (6.000 €) allotted to the beneficiary to cover the costs of travel, lodging and financial support.

    4.2. Said quantity will be paid in a lump sum at the beginning of the Residency and will be subject to tax withholdings that correspond to the beneficiary, in accordance with the Tax Law on the Income of Physical Persons.

    4.3. The Visiting Researcher positions shall last for two (2) months, and are not renewable. The specific date of the Residency will be determined by mutual agreement between the beneficiary of the Visiting Researcher position and the MNCARS. The timeframe of research activities will be continuous from the initial starting date agreed upon by both parties.

    4.4. Necessary facilities and resources will be provided to the beneficiary of the Visiting Researcher position to carry out research at MNCARS and will encourage participation in its activities in different areas.

  5. Application Materials and Deadline

    5.1. Applications must comply with the form attached to this call for submissions, either typed or written in block letters, and must be sent by certified priority mail to the following address:

    5.2. To be eligible for consideration, applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2009.

    5.3. The following documentation must be included with the application:

    a) A photocopy of the applicant’s passport or National Identification Card, accrediting the applicant’s personal information and nationality.

    b) A Curriculum vitae accrediting the applicant’s professional profile, along with copies of documents that justify the merits outlined therein.


    c) A project description to be carried out during the Residency in accordance with guideline 2.b in the present call for submissions.

    d) A project outline for a public activity and a seminar to be carried out at MNCARS during the Residency, in accordance with guideline 2.c in the present call for submissions.

  6. The Selection and Notification Process for the Visiting Researcher positions

    6.1. Within two months after the deadline for submissions, a Selection Committee shall be formed whose aim is to rank and select the applications presented within the guidelines.

    6.2. During this process, the Selection Committee shall consider the criteria specified hereafter:

    a) The professional profile of the applicants, in accordance with guideline 1.a of the present call for submissions, for a maximum value of three (3) points.

    b) The research proposal to be carried out during the Residency, in accordance with guideline 2.b of the present call for submissions, for a maximum value of five (5) points.

    The evaluation process shall consider the adequacy of the project objectives to one of the following lines of research:

    -Redefining modernity from its peripheries

    -Investigating new modes of cultural production and dissemination from networked knowledge

    -Alternative re-readings of international contemporary art history with emphasis on Spain and Latin America

    c) The project of a public activity and seminar to be carried out at MNCARS during the Residency, in accordance with guideline 2.c of the present call for submissions.

    6.3. The Selection Committee shall be presided by the Assistant Director of International Relations at the University of Alcalá, and shall consist of the following members: the Director of MNCARS, the Head of Cultural Programming at the MNCARS, the Coordinator of the Official Graduate Studies Program “Masters and Doctoral Degree in Art History and Visual Culture” at MNCARS, and an institutional representative from Banco Santander. The acting Secretary of the Selection Committee shall be Head of Cultural Programming at the MNCARS.

    6.4. Once the selection process is complete, the University of Alcalá will publish the names of the five selected beneficiaries of the Visiting Researcher positions, as well as the names of the alternates.

    6.5. Beneficiaries selected for the Visiting Researcher positions will be informed by the Selection Committee on an individual basis and must confirm in writing, within ten natural days after notification, their decision to accept or decline the position.

  7. Obligations of the Beneficiaries of the Visiting Researcher positions

    Upon accepting the position, beneficiaries are obligated to:

    a) Begin their Residency on the date agreed upon with MNCARS in accordance with guideline 4.3 of the present call for submissions.

    b) Carry out a public activity and a seminar according to the guideline 2.c in the present call for submissions, coordinated by the Department of Cultural Programming at MNCARS.

    c) Present a Final Report of research carried out during the Residency, to be submitted within three months after its completion.

    To conclude, grievances or appeals to the present Resolution may be presented by interested parties within two months after its date of publication to the Court of Administrative Appeals in Madrid.
