The Universidad Complutense de Madrid, on behalf of the Conference of Rectors of Public Universities in Madrid, hereby announces the third annual call for applications for research residencies at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in collaboration with the museum and Banco Santander.

1.- Objet

To announce the availability of five research residencies at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, to take place during the period between October 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.

2.- Candidate requirements

To be eligible for these residencies, the candidates must:

a) provide documentary proof of their professional activity, as a researcher, artist or teacher, in one or more of the following lines of work and study:

  • Analyses and/or proposals of methods and poetics for critical intervention in contemporary culture, with emphasis on the post-colonial debate and globalisation, gender politics and new manifestations of collective intelligence and action.
  • Analysis and/or creation related to the cultural and artistic reality of Latin America, from a range of perspectives: alternative definitions that resist the modernism of "the North”, poetic and political activation of the artistic legacy of the Latin American avant-garde, the construction of new subjectivities on the global scene.
  • Exploration of the modes of production, management and interpretation of information and documentation in the new archive cultures, and also research on the means by which information is shared in open networks.
  • Research involving the collection of documents on Spanish and international contemporary art, with emphasis on documents that are either part of the Museum's Documentation Centre, or should be part of it.
  • Exploration of new pedagogical methods and/or analysis of the pedagogical dimension of research activity or artistic work.

b) present a research proposal describing the research to be conducted during the residency. The proposal should be no longer than 3000 words.

c) present a proposal for a public activity and seminar for the community of post-graduate students at the Museum's Study Centre, to take place during the research residency. Both the public activity and the seminar will be organised in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Programs at Museo Reina Sofía.

3.- Purpose and aim of the residencies

3.1. The purpose of the residencies is to stimulate research and participation in a process of reflection, by making available Museo Reina Sofía's bibliographical and documentary resources, and also to encourage participation in the research groups linked to the programs offered at the Museum's Study Centre.

3.2. Taking part in these residencies does not mean that any type of contractual or statutory relationship is formed, nor does it mean that there is any kind of employment relationship between the beneficiary of the residency and Museo Reina Sofía.

4.- Monetary allowance and length of the residencies

4.1. The monetary allowance for each research residency is, in gross figures, six thousand euros (€6000). This allowance is to be used by the beneficiary to cover travel expenses and the cost of room and board. The beneficiary will be paid this amount by means of a deposit made in a current account the beneficiary must open in Banco Santander.

4.2. The aforementioned amount will be paid on a one-time basis, at the beginning of the residency and the corresponding taxes will be withheld, as required by the Spanish Law on Personal Income Tax.

4.3. The residencies will last two (2) months and cannot be renewed. The exact date that the residency will begin is to be determined jointly by the beneficiary and Museo Reina Sofía. It must be between October 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. The residency will take place during the two consecutive months immediately following the agreed starting date.

4.4. The resident will be given access to the infrastructure needed to conduct research in the facilities of Museo Reina Sofía and he or she will be encouraged to participate in the activities taking place in its various areas.

5.- Application method and deadline

5.1. Applicants must use the application form provided for this purpose. The forms are to be completed mechanically or in block capital letters and must be sent by registered mail to the following address:

5.2. The deadline for submitting applications is January 31, 2012 and the applications must therefore be postmarked on or before this date.

5.3. The application must be accompanied by the following documentation:

a) Photocopy of the passport or other national identification document, proving the identity and nationality of the applicant.

b) Curriculum vitae, no longer than 3 pages in length, describing the applicant's professional profile and accompanied by copies of the documents supporting the merits mentioned therein.

c) Research proposal about the work to be done during the residency, as set forth in paragraph 2.b. herein. This proposal must be no longer than 3000 words.

d) Proposal for a public activity and seminar to be given by the researcher at Museo Reina Sofía during the residency, as set forth in paragraph 2.c. herein. This proposal must be no longer than 3 pages in length.

e) Any additional material must be provided in electronic format (DVD).

6.- Selection process and the awarding of the residencies

6.1. Within the two months following the application deadline, an Assessment Committee will be formed for the purpose of evaluating the applications received prior to the deadline.

6.2. In the performance of its functions, the Assessment Committee will take into account the criteria detailed below, with each criterion being given the weight specified:

a) Professional profile of the applicant, as set forth in paragraph 1.a) herein, with the applicant receiving a maximum of three (3) points.

b) Research proposal about the work to be carried out during the residency, as set forth in paragraph 2.b. herein, with the applicant receiving a maximum of five (5) points.

The assessment will consider the extent to which the proposal corresponds with one of the following priority research areas:

-Investigation of new modes of cultural production, knowledge dissemination and education.

- Alternative readings of contemporary art history and memory and archive policies, with emphasis on Spain and Latin America. Research focused on the collection of the Museum's Documentation Centre, or which contributes to its enrichment.

c) Proposal for a public activity and seminar for the community of post-graduates students, to be held at Museo Reina Sofía during the residency, as set forth in paragraph 2.c. herein, with the applicant receiving a maximum of two (2) points.

6.3. The Assessment Committee will be chaired by the Deputy Vice-Rector of Culture and Sports of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The other members will be: the Director of Museo Reina Sofía, the Head of Cultural Programs at Museo Reina Sofía, the Co-ordinator of the official post-graduate programme in History of Contemporary Art and Visual Culture offered by Museo Reina Sofía, and an institutional representative of Banco Santander. The Head of Cultural Programs at Museo Reina Sofía will act as Secretary of the Committee.

6.4. Once the applications have been examined and evaluated, the Conference of Rectors of Public Universities in Madrid will announce the list of the five beneficiaries of the residency, as well as a list of substitutes.

6.5. The selected applicants will be informed personally of the Committee's decision and must respond in writing, within ten calendar days, expressing their acceptance or renunciation of the residency.

7.- Obligations of the residents

Upon accepting the residency, the beneficiary agrees to:

a) Begin the residency on the date determined by mutual agreement with Museo Reina Sofía, as set forth in paragraph 4.3 herein.

b) Open a current account in Banco Santander so that the monetary allowance can be received.

c) Carry out the proposed public activity and seminar, as set forth in paragraph 2.c. herein, in coordination with the Museum's Department of Cultural Programs.

d) Present a final report about the research conducted, within the three months following the end of the residency. This report will be included in the holdings of the Museum's Documentation Centre.
