José Damasceno. Coordinates and Appearances Dates:February 8 - June 23, 2008 Coordenadas y apariciones is a project by José Damasceno (Rio de Janeiro, 1968) for the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which presents a cycle of different artworks created for the building’s public spaces—its hallways, stairwells, the garden, patio, facade, bookstore and library—moving beyond more orthodox notions that art should be limited to exhibition space alone. In total, the exhibition is comprised of nine installations which share in common the idea of creating and maximizing space, making this the first time that the Museum conceives of a show in direct dialogue with visitors moving outside the exhibition space format. The artworks invite visitors to reflect on what happens in the coordinates where they can be found and, likewise, to question spaces and movement throughout the Museum. Therefore, the project turns into the possibility of reconsidering places, routes and positions—points that end up producing explorations on where art is placed and what relationship it has to visitors. |
