Photographers María Bleda and José María Rosa work together to produce photographic series that document, somewhere between straight recording and evocation, uninhabited spaces and landscapes, whether historical or everyday, through a temporal dimension loaded with a feeling of expansion which can be seen in the sequence of their four most important projects: Campos de fútbol (Football Pitches), Campos de batalla (Battlefields), Ciudades (Cities) and Origen (Origin). To some extent, Bleda and Rosa’s work has links on a formal and conceptual level with that of Bernd and Hilla Becher and their followers in the German school, although its definition is closer to evocation than straightforward documentary recording.
The Campos de fútbol series was the project that began the Bleda and Rosa collaborations, as well as being the work that drew attention to them in the young Spanish art panorama of the 1990s. The photographs that make up the Campos de fútbol series approach reality from a short distance, from neighbouring houses and nearby spaces that the artists are close to. The series documents abandoned football fields which in many cases no longer serve their original purpose, in an attempt to reflect upon the passing of time in relation to a particular geographical space, as well as to deal with a ‘type’ of place, rather than a specific, identifiable one.
