    F[r]icciones is one of five exhibitions from Versiones del Sur dedicated to Latin American art and held simultaneously at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Sabatini building, the Palacio de Velázquez and Palacio de Cristal between late 2000 and early 2001. With various curators, the five exhibitions look at the particularities, connections and fragmentation of Latin American art since its beginnings until its most recent artistic creations from different points of view.

    Francis Alÿs. El profeta y la mosca

    Francis Alÿs (Antwerp, Belgium, 1959) is know primarily for his actions. Some of these actions include: walks around Mexico City dragging a magnetic toy dog that picks up metallic objects as it goes along, a walk around São Paulo carrying a perforated can of paint to leave a trail, moving a dune a few metres along with the help of five hundred volunteers from the Lima Biennial, or sending a peacock to represent him at the Venice Biennial; actions that turn heads towards the work of this international artist.

    The exhibition La visión impura (Impure Vision) presents a selection of works recently acquired by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and does so using the title to highlight the fact that the art produced in the latter part of the 20th century undermines any notion of purely visual art.

    The Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos welcomes the exhibition dedicated to Belgian artist Francis Alÿs (Antwerp, Belgium, 1959). The starting point of the exhibition is the work Fabiola (1885), whose whereabouts are unknown since the beginning of the 20th century, by the French painter and academic Jean-Jacques Henner. It looks at the idealised portrait based on the hagiography of the saint published one year earlier by a British cardenal and translated into ten languages, which aslo gave rise to the worship of the saint, thus establishing her “patron image”.

    In their efforts to distance themselves from a linear narrative of modernity, The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía addresses the Museum's vision as not merely a container of objects, but as an entity capable of producing new discourses for their Collection and generating new knowledge. For this reason through Two Different Readings of the Collection, two exhibitions have opened at the same time about the meaning of collecting and relating the Museum's Collection from two different points of view. Artists Rosa Barba and Juan Luis Moraza, have made an exhaustive study on the Museum's Collection to then choose a selection of works which can offer the public two alternative visions and proposals on the Collection.
