Live Arts

The audiovisual programs are intended to counteract the predominant model of the black cube, even at a time in which both film and video have become fully integrated and dissolved into contemporary art museums. Their aim is to explore the projected image using different formats and discourses: historical series that broaden – and question – the narrations told by the Collection, retrospectives that draw attention to other stories in the audiovisual history and programs that examine the close links that film and video have with contemporary artistic practices. At the same time, this programming seeks to define a space for film and video outside of the usual circuits, describing itineraries distinct from the spectacle and its derivatives.    

In the live arts, the Museum establishes a meeting point between its propositions in this realm and the proverbial white cube so often used in art exhibitions, but from which the live arts have been artificially expelled. By doing so it reveals that the genealogy of the live arts has been closely linked to that of the plastic avant-gardes since their very origins. The Museum's live arts programming, which includes theatre, music and sound art, is thus seen to bear a close connection to the Museum's theoretical discourse. Museo Reina Sofía also collaborates with the most important contemporary festivals in Spain, providing a venue for some of their performances. The Museum engages in continuous dialogue with them and plays a role in the formation of their discourses.

    In this seminar, Fundación de los Comunes, Red de Conceptualismos del Sur and Museo Reina Sofía put forward a reflection on issues of social, cultural and political memory through the work of archives that guard, transmit and produce public memory generated by the current forms of social action conservation, which also shuts out major parts of collective experience from dominant discourse.

    The premiere of Informe general II. El nuevo rapto de Europa (General Report II. The New Abduction of Europe), Pere Portabella’s latest film which addresses the political, economic, social and ecological dimension of the crisis from a perspective of networks and culture. The premiere will also be joined by the screening of a new restored version of Informe general sobre algunas cuestiones de interés para una proyección pública (General Report on Some Interesting Facts for a Public Showing), Portabella’s 1976 film that precedes Informe general II. The film-maker will be present at both screenings.

    Independent theatre groups in Spain revamped the stage from popular culture, university classrooms, alternative circuits and touring as a form of representation. As a whole, they represent a key chapter in the history of 20th-century theatre in Spain, and this seminar, integrated into a broader network project, looks to remedy the absence of debates and studies around this crucial subject.

    The confrontation between abstraction-realism and artistic imagination-social commitment has polarised a major part of 20th-century art history, dividing fronts, periods and movements from both sides. Yet the work of Andrzej Wróblewski (1927–1957) constitutes an exceptional chapter; the painter imagined a universe that was free from Biomorphic Abstraction whilst, on the back of the same painting, he figuratively documented the opposite: the existential suffering in the Second World War. This conversation introduces his work.

    Masterworks from American Avant-garde Experimental Film (1920–1970)

    Avid Eyes is an anthology of experimental American cinema curated by researcher Bruce Posner, who also oversaw the landmark film series Unseen Cinema, held in the Museo Reina Sofía in 2006. Avid Eyes features a selection of 37 recently remastered films that introduce the multiple pathways traced by American avant-garde cinema between 1920 and 1970.

    This double performance serves as an introduction to the Hito Steyerl retrospective in the Museo. The studied disappearance of the image in modern surveillance technology is developed in a performance lecture by the artist, followed by an exploration into the new acoustic landscape of war – between military noise and sounds from consumer devices - by Kassem Mosse. Both performances are a posthumous homage to Harun Farocki.

    The Falckenberg Collection, built around the concept of art as a space of revolt, assembles one of the most salient historical ensembles of art criticism in post-war Germany and America. In the face of complacency over the market and its logics, this collection represents a counter-current to ways of understanding the role of and narratives that stem from collecting.

    This talk offers the chance to move beyond the exhibition and focus on the references and shifts that make up the work of Ignasi Aballí, a key artist since the 1990s. Literature, exploring language and time and alluding to Georges Perec and Raymond Queneau, and film, as a space of representation, enter into dialogue within an artistic practice realised in different mediums and infiltrated by reality and its margins.

    Artissimo is a montage of film fragments based around the futility and stereotypes of the artist. Pazos’ film pieces together offcuts of mainstream cinema to show the artist as a fanciful and irate being beset with melancholy - a son of Saturn. He runs through all the clichés that still reside in the collective imagination, conveying what art is, or as Pazos himself puts it, that essential praise of the useless.

    This encounter, within the framework of the project Redes, from the Museo’s Study Centre, sees sociologist Christian Laval and philosopher Pierre Dardot set out a reflection of “the common” as a strategic paradigm for considering new socio-economic and political concepts of use in the design of new forms of democratic organisation that go beyond the categories of representation and political sovereignty that are consubstantial with modernity.

    Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster employs literature to explore the relationship between fiction and reality, and theatre to juxtapose an imaginary narrative of the present. This Intervalos session sees three of her films screened, including Otello 1887, a cinematic opera filmed in the Palacio de Cristal and co-produced by the Museo.

    Iconoclasm, desire, vulnerability, migration and cultural translation are some of the themes that impress particular intensity upon the work of Danh Vō. This encounter, also held in the Palacio de Cristal, sees the artist enter into conversation with Patricia Falguières, professor at the École des hautes etudes in social sciences in Paris, and author of essays such as Les Chambres de merveilles (Bayard, 2002).

    The presentation of Cristina Iglesias’ book and project could be seen as an epilogue to the exhibition Metonymy, a 2013 retrospective on the artist held in the Museo. Tres Aguas (Three Waters) is a sculptural intervention in the city of Toledo that joins nature, history and landscape.

    This encounter serves as an introduction to the retrospective devoted to Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi (Karachi, 1937 – Baroda, 1990), an exhibition that looks to acknowledge the specific nature of her work, beyond the canonical accounts that have systematically placed it within minimalist abstraction.

    The Museo marks the 55th anniversary of the OuLiPo group with two activities: The presentation of the work 66 Exercises in Style by Colectivo Armadillo, and a discussion which revolves around the group, which includes participation from illustrious specialists and certain members of this historic literary experiment.

    This film series presents a panoramic view of recent independent film from Latin America, while also introducing a new screening area in the Museo – the transformation of the outdoor terraces into a new open-air cinema. Scene Games offers an interpretation of the latest films from Latin American cinema, barely seen in Europe, where theatricality is the key element in approaching reality.

    The Limitless Place is the first collaboration between Museo Reina Sofía and the Centro Dramático Nacional (National Drama Centre) and Teatro Pradillo, with the latter conducting a programme of performances, lectures and encounters. It comes about from the desire to question the forms and language of the stage with the will to think about the theatre we actually want; what is, in short, the world we strive to build our society upon.

    Audiovisual traces between dance and performance, 1963–1986

    A debate runs through a whole century of images of bodies in movement: that which refers to the correspondence between these bodies in live performance (on stage, in the gallery or museum) and in film. Through this question, the aim is to elucidate whether the audiovisual record of practices in which the body is at the centre – contemporary dance and artistic performance – “faithfully” reflects its apparent inherent truth.

    Resonance is a series of sound interventions for a specific site, activating the acoustic and historical space in the Museo Reina Sofía’s Sabatini Building.     Founded by intellectuals such as Mario Pedrosa, Dore Ashton, Carlo Levi and the Spanish critic José María Moreno Galván, this institution represented a brief experience that, while connecting Chile and Palestine, Senegal and the spaces of resistance in the Western world between 1971 and 1973, was used to seek alternative references during the Cold War. This talk by its director, Claudia Zaldívar, introduces its history and recovery.
