Live Arts

In the live arts, the Museum establishes a meeting point between its propositions in this realm and the proverbial white cube so often used in art exhibitions, but from which the live arts have been artificially expelled. By doing so it reveals that the genealogy of the live arts has been closely linked to that of the plastic avant-gardes since their very origins. The Museum's live arts programming, which includes theatre, music and sound art, is thus seen to bear a close connection to the Museum's theoretical discourse. Museo Reina Sofía also collaborates with the most important contemporary festivals in Spain, providing a venue for some of their performances. The Museum engages in continuous dialogue with them and plays a role in the formation of their discourses.

Fluxus to the People is a program of concerts, activities, guided tours, lectures and also a documentary exhibition, all of which explore the imagination of the collective, the idea of art as a community tool and the process of de-specialization of the artist figure that is at the heart of the Fluxus movement. This program has consciously been given the format of a festival. First of all, it defends the playful, participatory and even burlesque nature of many of the avant-garde manifestations from 1960 onwards. Secondly, it explores new ways of approaching contemporary art from public activity.

What does the people mean? What is it that shapes a popular movement or the popular will? What are the limits, dangers and virtues of the new critical and emancipatory processes, sometimes misdescribed as populist? What differentiates the masses from the people or from a multitude? In other words, what are the different names of the people?

Ever tried? Ever fail? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. The four-decade career of Nacho Criado (1943-2010) seems to engage in a muted dialogue with this phrase by Samuel Beckett, in which the persistence of error shows scepticism to be a revealing working method.

  • Rosemarie Trockel. Dessert. Sculpture, 2007
    13 june, 2012 - 7:30 p.m.
    Seminars and conferences Conference

The work of Rosemarie Trockel (Germany, 1952) is a reversal of contemporary art's exhibition techniques. Although presented in series, her objects paradoxically break with cold minimalist or pop production and instead bear the imprint of the artisan techniques with which they are manufactured, tapping into the historic imagery of women's work in a post-industrial world.

    Live Arts Concert

Taking as a pretext the masterpiece The Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach we enter a world in which form and constructive balance represent a large part of the seduction, while never leaving behind an expressive search through the compositional formulas, processes, repetitions, calculations, counterpoint, etc, that have such a great presence in all of these works.
