Music, Dance and Performance

The audiovisual programs are intended to counteract the predominant model of the black cube, even at a time in which both film and video have become fully integrated and dissolved into contemporary art museums. Their aim is to explore the projected image using different formats and discourses: historical series that broaden – and question – the narrations told by the Collection, retrospectives that draw attention to other stories in the audiovisual history and programs that examine the close links that film and video have with contemporary artistic practices. At the same time, this programming seeks to define a space for film and video outside of the usual circuits, describing itineraries distinct from the spectacle and its derivatives.

The music, dance and performance activities that feature in the Museo Reina Sofía programme are closely linked to the theoretical discourse in the organisation of the exhibition programme and the narrative in the Collection. Along with its own activities, the Museo also produces other shared activities that are the result of ongoing dialogue with a number of established collaborators. These activities include festivals, theatre performances, music conservatories, independent spaces, etc.

To Make the Revolution Also Means to Put Back Into Place Things that Are Very Ancient But Forgotten

    Cinema and video Film series

Museo Reina Sofía will present, in collaboration with Filmoteca Española, a comprehensive retrospective on the film-makers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. The series, comprising works spanning from 1962 to the present day, reflects one of the most cohesive and relevant film projects in the 20th century, whereby cinema is both an artistic form and a way of politically bursting forth in the present. Engaging in dialogue with Jean-Marie Straub, the series includes new translations of the vast majority of the films, original format screenings, remastered copies, a significant number of premieres in Spain, and a new publication featuring essays on the film-makers.

    Seminars and Lectures Conference

At the present time, Humanities have lost the Renaissance concept stemming from the linguistic, social and philosophical-historical disciplines that were at every level of the formal education still taught a few decades back. The processes of globalisation inscribed in capitalist systems have prioritised education as a field of pragmatic knowledge at the expense of those disciplines engaged in the formation of civilised social coexistence and the role of citizenship understood from responsibility.

This activity, which marks the end of the retrospective in the Museo devoted to Constant, examines this total artwork’s place in the utopian urbanism that followed World War Two through a lecture by Anthony Vidler and a round-table discussion featuring participation from José Miguel de Prada Poole, Izaskun Chinchilla, José Pérez de Lama and Ethel Baraona.

    Two Readings of Andrzej Wróblewski

Cinema and video Screenings Seminars and Lectures Seminar

The conversation between the painter Luc Tuymans and the curator Ulrich Loock, and the film Wróblewski According to Wajda, premiered by the film-maker Andrzej Wajda in the Museo Reina Sofía, represent two reflections on the painting of Andrezej Wróblewski, who still challenges the interpretative frameworks of 20th-century art history today. A realist and at the same time abstract, an individualist whilst also an advocate of collective artistic practice, experimental yet socially committed, Wróblewski considers a series of ambivalences through his work that call into question key aspects of both his own epoch and the present.
