Restoration and conservation

Museo Reina Sofía is committed to the conservation and restoration of works of contemporary art, both at the physical level and in terms of the materials used. It also performs studies on and takes care of the works in its collection so as to ensure their correct conservation. In addition, the Museum uses preventive conservation techniques in all the works shown in its temporary exhibitions. The Museum's activity in conservation and restoration is divided into three areas:

Research: the Museum has a chemical analysis lab and facilities for photographic studies, IR reflectography and X-rays, for research purposes.

Preventive conservation: teaching and research projects in both Europe and Latin America.

Restoration treatments: specifically for painting, sculpture, cellulose media (drawings, engravings, prints, photography, etc.), installations and multimedia.
