Europe at War. The End of the Utopias

The period between the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and the end of World War II was marked by political commitment on the part of artists, who found themselves obliged to take a stand and to be explicitly militant. The most paradigmatic example would be Pablo Picasso, who began the period with Guernica and ended it with membership of the Communist Party.
